We have identified this 41 Magnum ammo as suitable for self-defense, but we’ve got to qualify that by pointing out it is not meant for defense against people. This is the kind of ammo you want in your revolver’s chambers when you are assaulted by Smokey, Yogi, Winnie, Paddington, Fozzie, or any other ursine brute!

This round owes its suitability for bear protection to its bullet: a 230 grain hard cast semi-wadcutter. A hard cast bullet is made primarily of lead, but it is toughened considerably by the addition of other metals such as tin, antimony and even silver. The hard cast bullet is essentially incapable of deformation. That ensures it can penetrate more deeply, which is an enormous advantage when you are squaring off against a particularly large, fat and muscular animal. Despite its inability to undergo terminal expansion, the semi-wadcutter’s sharp shoulder and cylindrical profile do help it to excavate a highly injurious wound channel through soft tissue. This round’s bullet also features a gas check, which creates an effective seal against the bore to promote more efficient ignition in addition to helping the bullet engage with the rifling.
