This overpressure cartridge accelerates its 200 grain projectile to a muzzle velocity of 1,080 fps. Although Speer utilized a 5” test barrel to record that figure, the Idahoan company asserts that this ammunition is still effective in conjunction with a compact handgun’s shorter barrel. Just take care to only fire this ammo in a firearm that is rated for +P; consult your firearm’s manual or manufacturer if you are uncertain.
This round’s bullet is an extensively engineered jacketed hollow point. It attends to effectively deep penetration courtesy of its electrochemically bonded jacket. In addition to promoting better accuracy via its virtually perfect concentricity, the jacket resists splintering away from the bullet during high-velocity penetration of barriers or soft tissue.
This round’s JHP appears to be a soft point at first glance. That is because its shallow, dish-like nose cavity contains high-performance elastomer. Impact forces the material to infiltrate and expand inside the underlying core’s internal fissures. The JHP erects a symmetrical array of petals as a result, which maximizes trauma to surrounding soft tissue and reduces the risk of overpenetration.
As a final welcome touch, Speer loads their Gold Dot G2 Carry Gun ammunition with nickel-plated brass cases. In addition to making the cartridge more visible in a dark chamber, nickel protects the case against corrosion and promotes smoother functionality by reducing metal-on-metal friction feeding and extraction.
