This is the right kind of ammo. When Black Hills Ammunition of Rapid City, SD isn’t hard at work producing match ammo for U.S. military sniper teams, they’re loading high-grade cartridges like the 5.56 you see here!
This round’s bullet is remarkably heavy: 77 grains, which gives it greater momentum and greater resultant resistance to wind drift. Note that a barrel twist of 1:8” or faster is necessary to sufficiently stabilize so heavy a bullet.
The open tip match isn’t a hunting bullet. It lacks any features that would have enabled it to expand upon striking soft tissue, as its design is completely dedicated to enhancing accuracy. That includes a thin copper jacket, as well as lead core that was poured into place (through the hollow point) so it could settle into a voidless, rotationally stable core. The OTM also features a cannelure that maintains its seating depth under recoil forces.
Black Hills gives their premium range and competition loads match primers, exquisitely uniform propellant charges, and high-grade reloadable brass cases. The cases have not been fired before; the discoloration on their necks only proves that they were correctly heat-treated at the factory.
