You’re not looking for the perfect 5.56x45 ammunition for plinking and target shooting. That’s because you’ve already found it: Winchester’s good old USA 5.56, which originates at the U.S. gummint’s historic Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. If you’ve ever done basic training, then you’ve already fired this ammo!*

This is M193 specification ammunition, which is another way of saying it’s the simplest kind of 5.56 the military needs. You got your nonmagnetic 55 grain full metal jackets, your noncorrosive Boxer primers, and your new (yet unpolished) reloadable brass cases. It’s like a healthy balanced breakfast, but for a rifle.

We’ve not discerned which test barrel length Winchester used to capture this round’s reported 3,180 fps muzzle velocity (though it has to be 20” or 24”; we’d guess 20”). They have published the following ballistics data, which suggest that the round’s G1 BC equals 0.250.
0yds: 3,180 fps | 1,235 ft lbs
100yds: 2,786 fps | 948 ft lbs | 0.0”
200yds: 2,425 fps | 718 ft lbs | -3.0”
300yds: 2,092 fps | 534 ft lbs | -12.0”
400yds: 1,787 fps | 390 ft lbs | -29.0”
500 yds: 1,516 fps | 281 ft lbs

*Unless you served prior to our military’s adoption of the 5.56 in 1964, of course.
