“Monolithic.” It describes a bullet that is made of just one metal, which this round’s most certainly is. With the exception of its polymer tip, the CX is all copper alloy! It doesn’t leave behind lead fouling. It doesn’t run afoul of laws banning lead hunting bullets. It doesn’t adulterate fresh meat with lead!
The CX also doesn’t have a jacket and core that can split apart from one another on impact. That plus copper’s high ductility translates to a bullet that consistently exhibits as little as 95% weight retention. That’s why the CX reliably delivers a deep penetration/wide expansion combo that drops ‘em dead!
The CX is one sleek beast – like a miniature cheetah, but not cute. Its optimum groove geometry reduces in-flight drag, as does its Heat Shield tip (which is made of polymer that won’t deform in reaction to aerodynamic heating). Hornady’s 24” test barrel gives the 90 grain CX a 2,950 fps muzzle velocity, 0.418 G1 BC, and the following approximate ballistic performance:
0yds: 2,950 fps | 1,739 ft lbs | -1.5”
100yds: 2,726 fps | 1,485 ft lbs | 4.0”
200yds: 2,513 fps | 1,263 ft lbs | 4.8”
300yds: 2,310 fps | 1,067 ft lbs | 0.0”
400yds: 2,117 fps | 895 ft lbs | -11.3”
500yds: 1,932 fps | 746 ft lbs | -30.3”
600yds: 1,759 fps | 618 ft lbs | -58.8”
