After firing five rounds of Speer 115 gr Gold Dot from a Smith & Wesson M&P9c into synthetic ballistic gelatin from 10 feet away through four layers of fabric to simulate clothing, we then measured the expansion and penetration of the bullets for this 9mm Luger (9x19) load, which you can see in the chart below.
The photos below provide a detailed view of the the expanded bullets that were recovered from the gelatin. The high speed video shows the first of our five shots as it entered the gel.
Finally, if you'd like to see how this Speer load compares to other 9mm Luger (9x19) loads, check out the diagrams at the bottom of the page. Want to know more about our ballistic gelatin testing and self-defense ammo? Check out Lucky Gunner Labs for more information.

Outstanding 9mm Round
Review by NC Guy
I have been relying on the 9mm 115 grain Speer Gold Dot for over 20 years. It's consistently reliable, widely available, reasonably priced, easily controllable, and performs extremely well. This 115 grain bullet penetrates more than adequately (I would not want it to penetrate any more than it does), and expands reliably. I truly feel that Speer found the sweet spot and really nailed it with this round.

Functions flawlessly in my P320s (carry and sub-compact) and my P229. My agency issues the Winchester 147 grain for duty carry, but my off-duty magazines are loaded with this round.

cant beat Gold dot
Review by slasher
No matter the caliber, Speer Gold dot is the way to go for law enforcement and self defense alike. Can argue with FBI and multiple police agencies using Gold dot

Very good choice
Review by SImpleMan
I find the Gold Dot and Federal HST very similar and tend to keep both on hand, though I prefer the 124 gr. I have no real preference and have complete confidence it both.
