Federal Premium markets their Tactical HST label 9mm ammo to law enforcement agencies. But make no mistake: you do not need to be a cop to order this ammunition.
The HST is Federal’s state-of-the-art jacketed hollow point. At 124 grains, it's all set to depart from a 4” barrel at a supersonic velocity of 1,150 fps. That ensures the bullet will conserve at least 300 ft lbs of kinetic energy until it reaches approximately 50 yards, and also secures -0.9” drop at 50 yards after having cleared a 25-yard zero.
The HST JHP does not have a bonded jacket. Even so, it possesses the superior durability requisite for reliable barrier penetration and wound channel depth alike. If fired into a block of ballistic gelatin that is shielded by four layers of clothing at 10’, the HST will retain 100% of its weight as it tunnels to a depth of approximately 12”. Under those conditions, the HST will expand in diameter by approximately 66%. The HST also retains over 95% of its weight after passing through wallboard, plywood, and even two layers of 20 gauge steel, and it retains its capacity for broad terminal expansion as well.
Federal loads this ammunition with nickel-plated brass cases. That provides multiple performance advantages, including increased resistance to corrosion and less metal-on-metal friction that could have impaired functionality in a semi-automatic.
This bundle of ammunition includes 1,000 rounds of Magtech 9mm range ammo. These cartridges are loaded with non-expanding 115 grain full metal jacket projectiles. They generate gentle felt recoil, and do not contain steel and therefore cannot attract a magnet.
The Federal HST round has a 1,150 fps muzzle velocity and 364 ft lbs muzzle energy. The Magtech 9mm FMJ has a velocity of 1,135 fps and 329 ft lbs of muzzle energy.
