Speer doesn’t just assume they will always command a huge portion of the LE market. The Idaho company continues to push the line of ballistics technology – the reason why they introduced the new-and-improved Gold Dot G2 bullet in 2016, which they began making available to civilians in 2019.
First glance reveals the G2 bullet’s defining feature. It’s the black elastomer inside its narrow nose cavity – a supple synthetic substance, which compacts when it strikes flesh, and then forces its way into and compresses within the lead core’s internal fissures. That forces expansion, which takes the shape of a five-pointed star. Elastomer also shields the nose cavity against barriers, preventing it from obstructing with debris and becoming incapable of initiating expansion in turn.
The Gold Dot, and by extension the G2, has a molecularly bonded jacket. Speer’s Uni-Cor process fuses individual copper atoms to the JHP’s lead core one at a time, forming a concentric, extremely durable jacket as a result. This fortifies the Gold Dot for barrier penetration. It stays more intact while it pierces clothing, wallboard, etc., thereby retaining the momentum it needs to reach a threat’s vital organs.
