For Pete’s sake, whatever you do, do not use this ammo to hunt brown bear. It’s 7.62x39, which will most likely only succeed at annoying a brown bear. We won’t be held responsible if a brown bear sticks your entire body inside a wine bottle and places it on his mantelpiece for decoration!

Brown Bear ammunition is made by Barnaul, and is partially named after the color of the lacquer covering its steel cases. The finish helps steel create less friction during passage through the rifle, and also protects it against tarnishing, rusting, or whatever you want to call the chemical reaction. Speaking of “chemical reaction,” this ammo’s Berdan primers are noncorrosive (and yet another reason why the steel cases aren’t reloadable).

Barnaul (and, by extension, Brown Bear) ammo is loaded with “magnetic” bullets. These rounds’ 123 grain expanding hollow points have mostly steel bimetal jackets, which are only of note because more than a few gun ranges ban them outright.
