This cartridge is loaded with a Hi-Shok jacketed hollow point. It is not as technologically advanced as the Hydra-Shok that followed it, or the HST that came after the Hydra-Shok. It’s still a soundly engineered JHP, however, with the robust copper jacket, hollow point nose cavity, and skived exterior it needs to plunge effectively deep and expand effectively wide.

Federal recorded this round’s 1,180 fps muzzle velocity using a 4” test barrel, and reports its bullet’s G1 ballistic coefficient at 0.120. That gives us a pretty accurate glimpse of its 50-yard performance:

Q: Basic question - I have a Walther P-38, 9mm. Wonderful pistol, always used FMJ but concerned that JHP might jamb. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A: Thanks for reaching out Dana! I can't guarantee any kind of performance out of a firearm I haven't personally tested. That said, your P38 is designed to fire all 9mm ammunition regardless of which bullet it's loaded with.

A: Thanks for reaching out Bill! Federal has indeed loaded their Hi-Shok bullet for a very long time – at least since the '80s. It's a fairly basic bullet as far as JHPs go, and it's been eclipsed by Federal's more technologically advanced bullets in recent years (like the Hydra-Shok and HST), but it's still an effective solution for self-defense if you can do without features that enhance more reliable penetration depth and expansion width.

Q: Sorry to ask, but what is the -19 in the caliber “9mm Luger (9-19)”?

A: Thanks for reaching out Bob! The cartridge we Americans commonly call "9mm" has other names including 9mm Luger and 9x19mm Parabellum. (To be sure, they're all the same exact thing.) The "9x19" part of the cartridge's name refers to two of its bullet's dimensions: 9 milimeters in diameter, 19 milimeters in overall length. In essence, it's the same idea as calling a board a two-by-four.

A: Yes sir, any of Hornady's 9mm ammo should function correctly in your handguns.

Q: Has anyone tried these through a compensated Glock 19? Sure would hate to pick these up and them not have enough pressure to cycle the slide reliably.

Q: Printed on the box it says "Hi-Shock" does that mean hydro-shock? Still planning on ordering it even if they are regular hollow points cause it's an amazing deal, just curious.

A: These are not the same projectiles as the Hydra Shok. This is a standard hollow point projectile. This particular projectile is the design before the Hydra Shok.
