What is #1 buckshot? It is smaller, lighter, and a couple sizes down from the more popular (and most common) 00 buckshot pellet. Here, we’ll show you:
00 buckshot: 0.33” diameter, 53.8 grains
0 buckshot: 0.32” diameter, 49 grains
#1 buckshot: 0.30” diameter, 40.5 grains
What are the key advantages to smaller #1 buckshot? First is higher pellet count. This 3” shell holds 24 pieces of #1 buck, whereas a double-aught load of the same length would hold about 15. That superior pellet count supplies a thicker pattern, which improves your odds of hitting a moving target. Second is reduced meat damage. Lighter #1 buck tends to have shallower penetration – still deadly, but not as destructive to the target as 00 buck. (That’s also a reason why some favor #1 buck for home defense, where over-penetration can be calamitous.)

This shell’s granulated buffering improves its pattern and striking power. The little plastic granules crush down during ignition, which protects the shot from dimpling and flattening. Smooth, spherical pellets cut through the air with the least frontal air resistance. They retain more energy and travel in tighter formation as a result!
