Ballistics Test Summary

Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Speer 40 gr Gold Dot from a Ruger LCR from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.

How this load compares to other .22 Magnum (WMR) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.

We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Q: Can you use this ammo in a lever action rifle chambered for. 22 mag?

A: Hello Joe, Yes, you can shoot the 40gr. JHP rounds by Speer in .22 WMR in a lever action rifle as long as your rifle is chambered in .22 WMR. These are excellent rounds for target shooting or hunting.

Q: Is it safe to use this ammo with a handgun that has a longer barrel? I have a Kimmel 22 mag with a 4 1/2 inch barrel ?

A: Hello Greg, Yes, the 40gr. JHP rounds by Speer in .22 WMR are safe to shoot in a longer barreled gun like yours as long as it is chambered in .22 WMR. You should have no problems with them.

A: You bet Michael. Kel-Tec's PMR30 is chambered for 22WMR and these rounds should function consistently well in that firearm.
