This 223 Rem cartridge is made by Fiocchi and features a 55 grain pointed soft point projectile. The bullet’s sharp meplat grants it slightly improved accuracy, and its exposed core enables it to widen and tumble within game in order to do it thorough harm -- for taking larger varmints such as coyote, such a bullet is hard to beat. (We recently read in the news that a Florida man held off an aggressive coyote with his coffee cup before he could run over it with his truck. That would do in a pinch, but a 223 Rem works better.) This bullet’s jacket not only serves to control the rate at which it expands, but also resists deformation and further ensures reliable penetration through varmint hide.
Fiocchi makes the great bulk of their centerfire rifle ammunition at their Missourian production facility. This round’s new brass casing, sensitive Boxer primer, and clean burning propellant therefore represent both Italian engineering and American workmanship, a nice fusion of two worlds, sort of akin to cheeseburger pizza.
