If you’re still newish to the wonderful wide world of bullets, know this: the MatchKing is not intended for hunting applications. Even though it has a nose cavity like a JHP, the MatchKing won’t expand!
So why does the MatchKing have a nose cavity, if not for terminal expansion? Allow us to explain. As an open tip match, the MatchKing’s exceedingly thin and abnormally concentric copper jacket is formed first. Afterward, hot liquid lead is injected through the small opening in its tip. In addition to creating a bullet with a fully jacketed base (which prevents lead aerosolization during ignition), this process yields an almost perfectly uniform lead core.
The payoff? A 77 grain bullet with superior rotational stability – such that its G1 ballistic coefficient is a towering 0.372, which is why this round’s trajectory is so predictable and also why its velocity stays supersonic out to an astounding 900 yards. That’s awesome!
