Do you carry a 25 ACP pistol to keep yourself and your wallet intact while you’re going about your daily business? Then you couldn’t do much better for yourself than by chambering this round from Hornady’s Critical Defense line of ammunition. The round is fitted with a 35 grain FTX Projectile, the columnar Flex Tip of which prevents its hollow cavity from clogging with fabric as it penetrates a threat. During penetration that tip wedges hard within the FTX’s high antimony lead core, causing devastating expansion which said threat will not be able to walk off. The FTX also boasts the ability to tunnel deeply within a target, as the InterLock ring which mechanically binds its core and jacket together promotes superior weight retention.
This round’s brass casing is plated with nickel, so it possesses great lubricity for certain cycling in a semi-automatic firearm, the ability to be spotted quickly during a hurried chamber check in dark settings, and enhanced corrosion resistance. You’ll also like how this round’s specially formulated propellant doesn’t emit a flash that will blind you when it ignites in the dark.

Ballistic gel test for 25 ACP - 35 Grain FTX - Hornady Critical Defense - 25 Rounds
Ballistics Test Summary
In order to find out how different self-defense handgun loads perform, we decided to do some ballistics
gelatin testing of our own. The chart below is a compilation of expansion and penetration data for Hornady 35 gr FTX Critical Defense
fired from 10 feet, through four layers of fabric (to simulate clothing), using a Beretta 950BS Jetflire pistol.
The photo slider provides a close-up view of the bullets we recovered from the gelatin, and the video shows
this load entering the gel in extreme slow motion.
The diagrams at the bottom of the page can give you an idea of how this load compares to other .25 Auto (ACP)
self-defense loads that we tested.
We did a lot more of this ballistic gelatin testing, including over 100 different loads in a variety of
calibers, so check out Lucky Gunner Labs
for all the details.
