Hornady loads these subsonic cartridges in Nebraska with two key components: high-inertia 208 grain full metal jacket projectiles (nonmagnetic), and weaker-than-average propellant charges. Hornady reports 1,025 fps muzzle velocity out of a 24” test barrel, which is safely ~100 fps lower than sonic. So heavy a bullet naturally has a very high ballistic coefficient: G1 0.579, by our measure, which stands for the following kind of performance:
0yds: 1,025 fps | 485 ft lbs | -1.5”
50yds: 1,006 fps | 467 ft lbs | 7.7”
100yds: 988 fps | 451 ft lbs | 8.3”
150yds: 972 fps | 436 ft lbs | 0.0”
200yds: 956 fps | 422 ft lbs | -17.5”
250yds: 941 fps | 409 ft lbs | -44.5”
300yds: 928 fps | 398 ft lbs | -81.3”
Remember! Subsonic ammo’s not liable to cycle a standard AR gas system. Gotta have a suppressor to generate the back pressure necessary to operate a fresh-out-of-the-box semi-auto.
