Sellier & Bellot is going to give you a massive infusion of the 38 Special ammunition you need for training and target practice. This is standard pressure ammo, so it will work safely in older 38 Special revolvers in addition to all 357 Magnum firearms. Its bullets have flat point nose profiles, so it will load safely in 357/38 lever action rifles as well!

This cartridge is loaded with a 158 grain bullet, which will achieve 889 fps muzzle velocity in conjunction with a 7.5” barrel. There is no way to say for certain what kind of muzzle velocity a snub nose will exhibit without chronographic testing, but it will certainly be lower than 889 fps.

The full metal jacket projectile wears a copper-zinc alloy coating that significantly reduces lead fouling of the barrel. It cannot expand or otherwise deform while it penetrates soft tissue, so it’s not your best option for personal protection, although its lead core and CuZn 30 jacket do make the FMJ completely nonmagnetic.

This 38 Spl ammo is loaded in the Czech Republic by a company that is nearly 200 years old. Sellier & Bellot’s Boxer primers won’t corrode your firearm, and their new brass cases are always reloadable.

Sellier and Bellot is an ammo company from the Czech Republic that's been around since the 1820's. They're owned by the CBC parent company that also runs the Brazilian-based Magtech, another respected ammo company.

Today, S&B makes ammo for civilians, military forces, and law enforcement in countries all over the world. They produce a wide variety of handgun loads, including a few 38 Special rounds, like the one that we're looking at for this review.

This 158 grain full metal jacket load features a reloadable brass case and a non-corrosive primer. Like a lot of the 158 grain 38's you'll find, this one has very mild recoil. With the jacketed bullets, you also avoid some of the smoke and toxic fumes associated with the plain lead round nose bullets.

We tried out a couple of boxes of this ammo with a few different guns. We used five revolvers and one lever action carbine to get a feel for how it handles.

The recoil with this round is incredibly mild, which was especially noticeable when shooting the lightweight Ruger snub nose. When fired in a larger revolver and our carbine, you could barely feel the recoil at all. This makes it a great load for introducing new shooters to center fire handguns, or just something fun for plinking at the range.

Reliability was no problem, with consistent ignition and extraction in all of our guns. We tested accuracy at 25 yards, using our Marlin 1894 on a bench rest. Our 10 shots grouped really nicely in a small pattern just to the right of the bullseye. This rifle tends to shoot slightly better with Magnum loads, but this S&B ammo was one of the most consistent rounds that we've tested in the Marlin, in either a 38 or 357.

Overall, I've been pretty impressed with the performance of S&B ammo in any caliber, but this 38 Special load exceeded my expectations.

Q: Hello, is it considered as a standard load and not rated +P since there are not a lot of info about this cartridge and some +P ammo are not labeled "+P". can i shoot it with my colt detective 2nd issue? (1969 build)

A: Thanks for reaching out Toufic! This is standard pressure ammunition, not +P, so it produces a safe amount of chamber pressure for your '60s Colt Detective Special. This round's 889 fps muzzle velocity was recorded with a 7.5" test barrel. I can't say exactly what muzzle velocity you will get with your Colt without doing a chronograph test, but you should certainly expect a slower one whether your barrel is 2" or 3".

A: The inner projectile is made of lead, while the jacketing on the outside of the round is copper. Additionally, no part of the round will stick to a magnet.
