Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Hornady 165 gr Critical Defense from a Glock 27 from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.
How this load compares to other .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.
We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Ammo purchase and review
Review by Doug
This ammo is definitely used for short barreled weapons and offers great reliability. It is a bit pricey but what kind of a price do you put on your life. Stay safe and stay armed.

Best NJ Ammo Available
Review by NJCOP Ret.
This is great ammo by any means. It penetrates as needed. It expands and it's disruptive. It was designed for shorter barrels but really is a butt kicker in standard length barrels. NOW HEAR IN THE USSR AKA NJ even us retired law enforcement aren't allowed to carry hollow points so we have the choice of this ammo, Federal EFMJ like the Guard Dog or FMJs. Now Guard Dog will do and the older LE 165gn EFMJs (no longer available) were better than FMJs but with the Hornady you're really not giving up anything compared to a hollow point round. THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE IS THE PRICE. Yeah its good ammo but at a DOLLAR A SHOT one does not shoot a lot of it. You shoot a few for function and sight in and then ... well... ball or reloads are what's going down the pipe for practice. Yes, please Hornady please bring your prices in line with the rest of the industry as all your ammo is way over priced. If I had the choice in NJ I'd be carrying HSTs in my 40 and 115+p+s in my 9mm.

As said in another review a little high on price as far as local stores. But when needed Im very happy with this ammo, fires great, keeps gun clean, never jams in my beretta 40 px4 storm subcompact. Which is what I'm looking for in a good ammo.

Excellent in Glock 23 and 27
Review by Tack
Reliable feeding in my Glocks. No problem with flash or recoil. Hornady's 165 gr Critical Defense round performs exactly as it is supposed to. A little pricey in local stores, but available for a reasonable price online.

The Luckygunner team was extremely accommodating and helpful. They guided me through the ammo selection process and helped select the right ammo for use in my situation. I look forward to doing business with the team in the future.

Good round for compacts or subcompacts
Review by Dave
From my tests, the shorter the barrel, the deeper the penetration but either way, this round will be terrific. I gave it a four in performance because I needed a shorter barrel to get good penetration and expansion. But this is a reliable round....just not recommended in anything but subcompacts

only ammo to buy
Review by Duke Of Earl
I only use hornady 40 cal for my S&W M&P.
Never had a problem with it and my weapon stays pretty clean after 500 rounds.
Low flash and not a problem with recoil.
