A: Hi John. They are exactly right. Newer ammunition is designed for firearms capable of handling higher pressures. You should only fire the lighter "Cowboy" loads such as the Black Hills 405 grain Lead Flat Point. https://www.luckygunner.com/45-70-405-grain-fpl-black-hills-ammunition-20-rounds
Please have a qualified gunsmith check your old rifle out prior to firing ANY cartridge. Make sure it is safe first, then have a blast!

This ammunition is specifically designed for use in lever action rifles and the polymer tip on the projectile makes it safe for use in tubular magazines.
