It’s no great secret what that is. Federal Premium American Eagle Subsonic is loaded with a relatively light bullet, but its muzzle velocity is fantastically tepid at 1,000 fps nonetheless.
If your 45-70 rifle has a suppressor – and you want to hear the best suppression it can muster – then you can choose no finer ammo.
This is dedicated target ammo. Nothing would be particularly happy about getting hit by its 300 grain bullet, although its striking energy is nowhere near that of a full-powered load. Its hollow point bullet isn’t designed for terminal expansion, either. And if you thought a regular 45-70 had a pretty slopey trajectory, then you ain’t seen nothing yet. Here’s the 0.290 G1 BC HP’s reaction upon attaining its advertised subsonic muzzle velocity:
0yds: 1,000 fps | 666 ft lbs | -1.5”
50yds: 966 fps | 622 ft lbs | 3.9”
100yds: 937 fps | 585 ft lbs | 0.0”
150yds: 910 fps | 552 ft lbs | -13.8”
200yds: 886 fps | 523 ft lbs | -38.1”
