Lever-action rifles rapidly fell out of favor after WWI, which showcased the accuracy and the solidity of the bolt action to millions of American sportsmen. But lever guns still live on, and are currently experiencing something of a renaissance. We’re glad to see it!
And so is Winchester, because that surging popularity gave them all the reason they needed to introduce American Lever Range ammunition in 2026. These 45 Colt cartridges are loaded with 250 grain lead flat nose bullets, which are shaped for safe storage and smooth feeding in a lever action. Winchester’s 20” test barrel delivers the bullet at a low muzzle velocity relative to its weight (900 fps, as opposed to 1,025 fps as seen in Federal HammerDown). Perfect if you seek the comfier target shooting experience.
Here’s this round’s estimated ballistic performance out of a 20” barrel, which we calculated using 0.163 G1 BC:
0yds: 900 fps | 450 ft lbs | -1.5”
25yds: 879 fps | 429 ft lbs | 0.7”
50yds: 859 fps | 410 ft lbs | 0.0”
75yds: 840 fps | 392 ft lbs | -3.6”
100yds: 822 fps | 375 ft lbs | -10.3”
