The M855 bullet jacket’s tip is painted green to indicate that it does not have a solid lead core. The frontal section of the core is made of steel, which strengthens the bullet so it can break through sheet metal and other strong barriers. The M855 bullet’s lead and steel core sections may also snap in half during penetration of soft tissue, which will produce two highly damaging wound channels.
At 62 grains, this round’s bullet will get the best accuracy when fired through a 1:9 or 1:8 twist barrel. A 1:7 twist barrel is also acceptable for close-to-medium range target shooting. And while this may go without saying, the M855 bullet’s steel content does make it magnetic.
