Does M855 mean you can’t fire this ammo in your AR-15? Far from it! This 5.56 ammo by Winchester is a great all-purpose pick for any kind of range blasting fun you’ve got lined up.

This round’s 62 grain bullet is just a little more special than your average FMJ. Sure, it’s got a gilding metal jacket to drive reliable feeding and help keep lead residue out of your barrel, but its core isn’t made of solid copper. The front half of the core is made of steel.

That obviously makes the bullet magnetic, but it also makes it much better able to pierce sheet metal. At close range a bullet like this has little trouble blasting through a 1/8” thick piece of steel.

See how this ammo’s cases are discolored? That’s actually a feature: It proves the new brass cases have been heat-treated to improve their durability, so you can count on reloading them back at home. A: Yes sir! This ammo should function correctly in any 5.56 firearm, including all S&W M&P rifles. Take care that the M855 bullet contains a partial steel core – not all indoor ranges allow it on their premises. Also note that your 5.56 rifle is additionally compatible with 223 Rem ammunition.

Q: What does loose packed mean?

A: Hi Laura! It means that the case of ammo isn't divided among smaller boxes. Instead of twenty 50-round boxes, a loose-packed case of ammo contains 1,000 rounds all lying together. It's like bulk candy, only better because it's ammo!

Q: Is this ammo new or reloaded? also is it made in the U.S.A ?

A: Thanks for reaching out Jack! This ammo's brand new, not reloaded. Its cases are only cosmetically discolored as the result of the annealing process. Winchester manufactured it at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO, which they operate and manage on behalf of the U.S. government.

Q: Just acquired 1000 rounds 62 grain fmj rounds from you, will this cause a problem with my ar compared to 55 grain rounds.

A: Good to hear from you Donald! Short answer, your AR-15 is going to function correctly with this ammunition. Typically, a 62 grain bullet delivers the very best accuracy out of a barrel with a 1:9" or 1:8" twist. However, a barrel with a twist of 1:7" or lower will also provide good, serviceable accuracy. I would assume your barrel twist is lower than 1:9". I'd be happy to check the stock barrel twist on your rifle for you if you like.
