This 5.7x28mm cartridge by FN Herstal sports a 40 grain V-MAX projectile by Hornady. Is the V-MAX designed for varmint hunting? From tip to toe, yes. Does that mean a home intruder wouldn’t mind getting pelted by a few of these rounds? Furthest thing from it -- he’d mind it very, very much.

The V-MAX is an accurate bullet, with a high ballistic coefficient that keeps its velocity faster downrange. Its sharp polymer tip doesn’t merely streamline its profile -- it further initiates highly deleterious fragmentation. The tip sits on the crest of the jacket and extends down into the swaged lead core, stopping just shy of touching it. When the V-MAX connects with a soft target, its tip builds up tremendous momentum before connecting with the core to disrupt it and the jacket instantaneously. Couple that with the 5.7x28mm’s innately high velocity, and you’ll get one heck of a terminal effect out of a Five-seveN, Ruger-57, or AR-57.
