This one’s for the bucks. The Federal Fusion soft point bullet is 140 grains of deer-pocalypse, and features a molecularly bonded jacket and core (just like the Gold Dot JHP Speer makes for law enforcement). High-energy impact doesn’t force the Fusion to splinter apart as dramatically as a conventional unbonded JSP, so it can dig in deep while its skived, preprogrammed nose lets out wide expansion.
Its bonded jacket also benefits the Fusion in the accuracy department. So concentric a jacket is balanced by nature, which helps the Fusion keep that skived nose trained squarely on what it’s meant to kill. Federal’s test barrel is 24” and reports 0.439 G1 BC for this ammo. We predict this kind of ballistic performance if your sight center is 1.5” high:
0yds: 2,925 fps | 2,660 ft lbs | -1.5”
100yds: 2,713 fps | 2,288 ft lbs | 4.0”
200yds: 2,511 fps | 1,960 ft lbs | 4.8”
300yds: 2,317 fps | 1,669 ft lbs | 0.0”
400yds: 2,132 fps | 1,413 ft lbs | -11.3”
500yds: 1,956 fps | 1,189 ft lbs | -30.2”
600yds: 1,789 fps | 995 ft lbs | -58.2”
Federal also reports terminal performance minimum velocity of 1,800 fps, which places this round’s effective range at around 600 yards!
