Much to American AK-47 and SKS enthusiasts’ consternation, the U.S. officially banned the import of Russian-made ammunition in 2021. Cheap go-to brands like Wolf, Tula and Barnaul went poof overnight.
Thank goodness American operations like Hornady are here to pick up the slack. And the Nebraskan company’s Frontier series 7.62x39 ammunition doesn’t have the conventional drawbacks of Russian-made ammo, either. These range-ready loads feature steel-free full metal jacket projectiles, as well as Boxer-primed solid brass cases that can be handloaded. See? Life’s not so bad for American AK-47 and SKS enthusiasts after all!
Hornady recorded this round’s muzzle velocity with a 24” test barrel; an AK, which has a 16.3” barrel (with some give and take, depending on the model), will produce substantially lower. Hornady’s reported 0.266 G1 BC stands for the following results out of a 24” barrel:
