The reason for this round’s EXTREMELY low 1,050 fps muzzle velocity (75 fps lower than the speed of sound) is pretty obvious. Two hundred fifty five grains is OUTRAGEOUSLY heavy for the 7.62x39. But the proof is in the pudding: very gentle reports, and perfect operation with a suppressor.
This round’s Sub-X bullet is specifically designed for subsonic performance. When impact drives the Sub-X’s large polymer tip down the shaft of its deep hollow point nose cavity, the bullet reacts by undergoing HUGE expansion. Hornady places the Sub-X’s G1 BC at 0.365.
