Well, at least not necessarily. The Federal Syntech Defense hollow point is such an exception.
This 9mm round’s 138 grain HP is segmented – designed to split apart, like the Space Shuttle shooting off into orbit, which poses four serious problems to the threat. First is the central core of the SHP: its heaviest fragment, which penetrates 12 to 18” deep in ballistic gelatin whether said gel is bare or shielded by thick clothing. Second through fourth are the petals, which split apart to inflict three separate 6” or longer wound channels.
One bullet. Four wound channels.
This isn’t lead-free ammo, but its performance may fool you into thinking otherwise. In addition to having LF Catalyst primers, its bullets are coated in Syntech polymer. The material eliminates core-on-bore contact, which eliminates metallic fouling altogether. Syntech also reduces friction, which is good for the bore!
This ammo i subsonic out of a 4” barrel, which, alongside its preternaturally clean-shooting performance, makes it ideal for use with a suppressor.
