This 9mm +P ammunition by Federal is something special. We wouldn’t recommend it for self-defense – unless the threat in question happens to be a bear, boar, or other large aggressive animal. That’s because its bullet is designed to penetrate extra deep without expanding!

This round’s 147 grain bullet has an unusually hard core, made of solid lead which is fortified with a whole lot of antimony. Unlike the typical hard cast bullet you might find on a revolver round, Federal’s bullet is completely jacketed in Syntech polymer. This ensures smooth feeding, eliminates lead fouling within the bore, extends a barrel’s lifespan by drastically reducing friction, and does away with the need for a gas check or wax ring.

So heavy a bullet becomes extremely powerful when loaded to a muzzle velocity of 1,120 fps out of a conventional handgun’s 4” barrel. At point blank range it plows into its target with around 400 ft lbs of energy. At 100 yards it still overpowers with well over 300 ft lbs of energy!

Federal plates this ammo’s brass cases with nickel for even smoother feeding and improved resistance to corrosion. Most modern 9mm handguns can run +P ammo no problem, including those made by Glock, SIG Sauer, S&W, Kimber, Taurus and Springfield. Overpressure ammo like this isn’t ideal for high volume range training because it accelerates wear on a semi-auto’s moving parts, but for self-defense that’s not a problem. Please drop us a Q&A if you’d like to make sure your firearm is rated for +P!
