Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Hornady 124 gr XTP Custom from a Smith & Wesson M&P9C from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.
How this load compares to other 9mm Luger (9x19) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.
We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Started with 115 fmj's for target and 124 xtp's for defense practice in my 92fs, and the difference in recoil is amazing, perfect handling, no hard kick ,and of course, deadly accurate. Now is my #1 choice!
A top-of-the line standard that's difficult to beat!
Use this ammo in a Ruger SR9c (3.4" Bl.) as a general carry load. Chrono shows a consistant 1045 - 1055 fps (@ 8 ft.) with little st. deviation. Clean burn, smooth function & no excessive flash or report. Very accurate & get quick recovery for follow-up shots. It sets the bar for working up re-loads at st. press. (difficult to match)! XTP's are old-style but quite effective (occasional jacket separation). A bit expensive in my area.
Great product, great price, and great service from LG
I got exactly what I wanted, at a fair price. Terrific service from Lucky Gunner. When my supply gets low, I can always depend on LG getting me back up to speed quickly and efficiently!

ammo + lucky gunner = win
Lucky Gunner consistently has the lowest prices on the widest selection of ammo. Great service too.
The Hornady 9mm feeds/fires well in my Ruger P95 and Smith & Wesson M&P 9c. Fortunately, I haven't had a chance to test its terminal performance, but that's what I bought it for.
