You've probably heard of most of the ammo brands under the ATK family of companies. CCI, Federal, Speer, and Blazer, these are all pretty popular. But you may not have heard of Independence ammo which is also another ATK brand. Independence is offered as a low cost range and training ammo with high quality US made components. We tested a couple of boxes of Independence in 45 ACP.
The 230 grain bullet has a lead core and is copper plated. Copper plating differs from a full metal jacket mostly in a process used to adhere the copper to the lead. Plating also covers the entire bullet without leaving the base exposed like most full metal jacket bullets. This makes them a little better suited for use in indoor ranges since there's less lead residue involved.
It's not recommended that you use plated bullets in a ported barrel since the port can sheer off the plating. Otherwise, plated bullets are a great alternative to full metal jacket and should give similar performance. The casings used for Independence ammo are reloadable brass with a Blazer head stand. The muzzle velocity of 830 feet per second is also identical to the Blazer brass load, leading us to believe that Independence and Blazer are essentially the same ammo with different packaging.
But that's really OK, because the Blazer brass that we've reviewed in the past has always been great ammo. Reliability with Independence was great, and we had no feeding or ignition failures in any of our test guns. Accuracy was also pretty good with a nice group right at our point of aim shooting from the bench at 15 yards. Like all the other ATK practice ammo that we've tested, Independence is a great value for the range. And I wouldn't have any problem recommending the 45 ACP variety.
great ammo for the price

I have shot hundreds of these rounds in my M&P 45, never one problem. Lucky Gunner has also taken care of several shipping issues (fedex) with no cost to me. You can buy your ammo here without worry.
