After firing five rounds of Hornady 90 gr XTP from a Glock 42 into synthetic ballistic gelatin from 10 feet away through four layers of fabric to simulate clothing, we then measured the expansion and penetration of the bullets for this .380 Auto (ACP) load, which you can see in the chart below.
The photos below provide a detailed view of the the expanded bullets that were recovered from the gelatin. The high speed video shows the first of our five shots as it entered the gel.
Finally, if you'd like to see how this Hornady load compares to other .380 Auto (ACP) loads, check out the diagrams at the bottom of the page. Want to know more about our ballistic gelatin testing and self-defense ammo? Check out Lucky Gunner Labs for more information.

Solid choice for 380
Review by flynbenny
For cost vs quality, this is probably the best and most available (online or in local retail) JHP round out there.
One thing I prefer about this load is it is not loaded down like a lot of 380 ammo. Therefore it is ideal for those who use a bigger gun, e.g. Glock 42, Sig P232, Walther PPK, etc.
I have shot close to 500 rds of XTP 380 in a Glock 42 with several different magazine configurations, zero problems. I have shot the ammo that has been carried for a long time, no problems. The bullet design is little dated, but provides great accuracy, and penetrates better in testing than a lot of other 380 hollow points.
Still my choice for carry, it is the best combination of quality, availability, and value.

Solid defense round
Review by virtualkelly
I have used the 380 XTP for several years in a Sig P232 stainless. Feeds and fires perfectly. I have not had any expansion problems. When testing with gel, it's important to make sure you aren't shooting through another shot's so-called wound channel (vapor trail). This will errantly cause the round not to expand. Good luck.
