Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Federal 165 gr Hydra Shok from a Kahr CW45 from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.
How this load compares to other .45 ACP (Auto) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.
We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Get'en 'ol ain't for sissy's

I had to face the fact the .45 ACP in 230gr. got the best of this 'ol gunslinger. So after much shopping around & spending a few coins this is my go to EDC self defense ammo. Fired off 200 rounds in my Glock 30S to complete satisfaction. No FTF, FTE issues from all tested rounds. Highly recommend it from a trusted manufacturer. Price point is slightly below other brands IMHO; however it's worth trusting your life to in a hopefully never to incounter life threatening critical incident. Easing into retirement after 18yrs of an awesome Law Enforcement career just got a bit easier. Stay safe & never stop training.

Very good personal defense ammo....Prefer a large primer though.

Large primers are more reliable than small.

Very clean and accurate ammo, much nicer to shoot from Kimber ultra carry 2 than 230 grain. A great self-defense ammo !

Perfect for my 3" S&W model 625 revolver

I have shot Federal Hydra-Shok pistol ammunition for many years in several calibers. It is reliable and accurate ammo. I enjoy shooting this new low recoil 165 Gr load. Very pleasant in my short barreled revolver and quite accurate along with low muzzle flash. A perfect close range self defense round.

I put this up against regular Hornady and Remington ammo of about the same weight. Although it weighed a little less, it still performed up to par with both of these ammos . Its been around a long time and the reason is that it consistently performs GREAT. Nothing is perfekt but I trust my life to Federal and always will. Its been around before plus P ammo and I bet it will be around after. Before +P ammo, Federal Hydra Shoks were top of the heap and in my humble opinion they always will be.
