A: Thanks for reaching out Darrell! Let me begin by saying that you can safely and reliably fire 223 Rem ammunition in a 5.56x45 firearm. I'll keep this explanation as brief as possible, but please ask me about anything you'd like better clarification on. The U.S. Army uses full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets in combat. They're obligated to do so for humanitarian purposes. *You* are allowed to use more effective bullets for self-defense than the FMJ, though. The ideal 5.56/223 defense bullet will expand inside of the threat, as that (A) maximizes trauma to the threat, and (B) reduces the risk of over-penetration that could jeopardize innocent bystanders.
