A: Thanks for reaching out Harold! This ammunition would be roughly about as effective for home defense as the U.S. Armed Forces' own 5.56x45 M193 cartridge. That's to say it is in fact capable of neutralizing an immediate threat to your safety. That said, there are better choices for home defense than this ammo, which is actually designed for long-range target shooting. You would ideally use ammo with polymer tipped or soft point bullets that are designed for terminal expansion. A bullet that expands during penetration inflicts greater damage to surrounding soft tissues and reduces (but doesn't eliminate) the chance of potentially disastrous over-penetration. If your rifle is chambered for 5.56, then it's also able to safely fire 223 Rem.
