Do you want to leave the sound barrier unbroken? GOOD! Because we’re selling 5.56x45 subsonic ammunition by Armscor, which utters a veritable peep of a report that doesn’t include a powerful blast wave. That means this is the ammo to buy if you’re trying to hear just how effectively a suppressor can do its job!
The vast majority of 5.56 77 grain ammo (e.g. MK 262) is supersonic. This cartridge is an exception, although its bullet is the same kind of open tip match you’d see on a match load. The sleek, high-momentum, balanced Hornady projectile is reasonably accurate out to around 100 yards. Could have been a lot farther if its muzzle velocity were higher – but it ain’t! (Note: The OTM is not a hunting bullet. It’ll trounce a varmint, but it cannot expand. Alongside its anemic striking energy, that makes it just about your worst choice for deer hunting.)
Armscor recorded this round’s 1,100 fps muzzle velocity out of a 18” barrel (expect even lower MV out of a shorter tube). The projectile’s G1 BC is 0.355. From that, we can infer the following approximate ballistic performance:
0yds: 1,100 fps | 207 ft lbs | -1.5”
50yds: 1,059 fps | 192 ft lbs | 3.2”
100yds: 1,025 fps | 180 ft lbs | 0.0”
150yds: 994 fps | 169 ft lbs | -11.4”
200yds: 967 fps | 160 ft lbs | -31.6”
