A: Hi Matt! You're correct. The 7.62x51 and 308 Win share identical dimensions. The 308 Win is loaded a little "hotter" than the military spec 7.62x51, which means a rifle chambered for 308 is also designed to handle greater chamber pressure than the 7.62 is capable of generating. That said, SAAMI doesn't consider it unsafe to fire 308 in a rifle chambered for 7.62, either. Long story short, you can use the two rounds interchangeably without risking damage to your firearm or personal injury.
