This cartridge’s most prominent feature is its Flex Tip. That’s the name of the soft polymer plug resting inside its FTX bullet’s nose cavity. It’s not there for show. It’s there to prevent the FTX’s nose cavity from getting obstructed by fabric particles or other debris, which in turn ensures it reaches the target’s flesh with its potential for wide expansion fully intact.
The most popular 357 Mag bullet weight for self-defense? Uncoincidentally, it’s 125 grains, which dishes out a good blend of weight retention, penetration, and expansion for neutralizing a human assailant. Hornady loads this round to hit 1,500 fps muzzle velocity upon departing an 8” test barrel (vented, to simulate the impact of a cylinder gap). The 125gr FTX’s 0.150 G1 BC means it then behaves like so:
0yds: 1,500 fps | 625 ft lbs | -0.5”
25yds: 1,401 fps | 545 ft lbs | 0.3”
50yds: 1,312 fps | 478 ft lbs | 0.0”
75yds: 1,232 fps | 421 ft lbs | -1.6”
100yds: 1,163 fps | 375 ft lbs | -4.6”
This ammo is loaded with low-flash propellant! Hornady says that muzzle flash is dimmer even when the barrel is shorter, which is great news if you don’t fancy becoming temporarily blinded by your own gun while you’re attempting to not die.
