This 357 Magnum ammunition puts some real firepower in your pistol. Each cartridge in this box of 25 fires a 125 grain jacketed hollow point XTP bullet at a muzzle velocity of 1500 feet per second.

The XTP bullet is a tried and true Hornady design known for its high penetration and ability to expand and incapacitate assailants quickly. These traits combine with the above-average muzzle velocity of the American Gunner load to produce an effective 357 Mag self-defense cartridge.

Like other Hornady defensive ammo, these cartridges use non-corrosive Boxer primers and brass cases.

Ballistics Test Summary

We test fired five rounds of .357 Magnum Hornady 125 gr American Gunner XTP into synthetic ballistic gelatin to observe its expansion and penetration characteristics. The ammo was fired from a Kimber K6s pistol at a distance of 10 feet. A four-layer barrier of heavy fabric was placed in front of the gelatin to simulate clothing.

The complete data for this load from our test can be found on the chart below. The photo slider displays the expanded bullets that were retrieved from the gel. Pictured below is a high speed video that shows the bullet entering the gel at approximately 10,000 frames per second. The diagrams at the bottom of the page should give you an idea of how this load compares to other .357 Magnum loads.

Q: Could I shoot this in a .357 desert eagle?

A: Hello David! I cannot recommend 125 grain bullets for a .357 Mag Desert Eagle. My understanding is that the lightweight bullet doesn't build up enough pressure behind itself to cycle the pistol. Please take a look at Magnum Research's list of recommended ammo: https://www.magnumresearch.com/PDF/DE-Rec-Ammo-List.pdf – it's not exclusive by any means, but nothing lighter than 140 grains is recommended. Many other cartridges than the ones listed should work well for you, although it's worth noting that this ammo is specifically recommended on the list: https://www.luckygunner.com/magtech-357-mag-ammo-for-sale-357mag158sjhpmt-50

Q: Was this ammo tested from a 4" barrel, or what length did they use?

A: Hi Mark! Hornady recorded this one's MV with an 8-V barrel (8" long; vented, to simulate the effect of cylinder gap).

Q: Can these be used in a lever gun without damage to the gun or the bullet?

A: Hi Court! XTP ammunition is known to function correctly in lever guns. I'd recommend this ammo for any 357 Henry, etc.
