In order to find out how different self-defense handgun loads perform, we decided to do some ballistics gelatin testing of our own. The chart below is a compilation of expansion and penetration data for Hornady 200 gr XTP +P fired from 10 feet, through four layers of fabric (to simulate clothing), using a Kahr CW45 pistol.
The photo slider provides a close-up view of the bullets we recovered from the gelatin, and the video shows this load entering the gel in extreme slow motion.
The diagrams at the bottom of the page can give you an idea of how this load compares to other .45 ACP (Auto) self-defense loads that we tested.
We did a lot more of this ballistic gelatin testing, including over 100 different loads in a variety of calibers, so check out Lucky Gunner Labs for all the details.

Superior ! Energy =Knockdown
Review by Rick Armstrong
A bit expensive, but I’ll be keeping it in my clip. I’ve only shot 13 rounds, but I’m impressed enough to save 7 for self defense.

Smooth action in G30S, hit 10 Ring on cold barrel first shot, cycles well, less recoil than expected, but no tests on expansion or weight retention. Basic range shooting gave a positive result.

very good defensive round
Review by Fwank
Feeds and cycles slick as glass in my Colt and Springfield XD45 Tactical. Accurate. Clean. It's kind of a hot load but recoil is not that much greater than hardball and I notice no difference in my split times with either gun, but then both are full-size pistols and the additional recoil might make more of a difference for those of you out there using smaller, lighter firearms.
Every test I see of it shows good expansion and excellent penetration in artificial media such as ballistic gelatin, even after penetrating multiple layers of heavy cloth, such as denim. Looks like an excellent performer as a defensive round.

I have only shot twenty rounds so far but, in my Colt 1911RG, one out of five failed to chamber. In my Colt 1911 Wiley Clapp they worked flawlessly.
